The fast, easy make that looks anything but. Puffed granny squares, arranged in a gridded spiral that curves perfectly to your head. This is modern streetwear, not a boxy granny-square hat, and nobody will believe how quickly it came together.

Here's the secret: if you can make a granny square, you can make this hat. The Fitted Cap takes just six squares; the Slouchy Beanie, nine. It's puff stitches and simple squares. The spiral layout does the fancy work for you, and the two spots that look tricky (the partial squares and the cuff join) each come with detailed step-by-step diagrams.

What you get

Two silhouettes in one pattern. The Fitted Cap (closer to the head) and the Slouchy Beanie (a longer, more relaxed drape). Make one of each from the same PDF.

A comfort cuff, engineered. A 1.5 cm increase is built into the cuff geometry so the fold-over is never tight or restrictive. Cuff depth adjusts easily by rolling more or less.

Sizing

Fits a standard adult head with comfortable ease: finished circumference 56.6 cm (approximately 22.3 inches). Depth adjusts with the cuff roll.

The Yarn

Three colors make the spiral. Two ways to get the fabric: a single strand of Medium / Worsted (#4) yarn (UK / EU: Aran), or two strands of Fine / Sport (#2) held together. Any brand works; the samples used 100% cotton.

Total yarn approximately 290 to 390 m (317 to 427 yds), about 2 to 3 skeins (100 g), split across your three colors.

Gauge

Your finished square is your gauge swatch: one completed Puffed Granny Square measures 13 cm (5.1 inches). The pattern shows you how to hit that number by adding or removing a round before you ever change hook size.
