The Brioche Crochet Vest doesn't look like the other crochet vests because it isn't built like them. Two-color side to side brioche produces a 3-dimensional fabric that drapes like a knit, in a silhouette engineered for a real oversized, high fashion fit, NOT just bigger numbers. Graded to Craft Yarn Council standards across seven sizes (XS through 3XL), with the same proportional drape from the smallest size to the largest.

The construction uses standard garment techniques executed in an approachable way, with video tutorials covering every step that needs one. Never installed a separating zipper? Our testers all executed it easily, and the dedicated video tutorial walks you through measuring, sizing, and installing your zipper with the integrated facing.

What you get with this pattern

  • Size-isolated PDFs: one per size (XS through 3XL). You print only your size, but have every size at your fingertips. No bracket soup, no highlighter. The intro PDF also includes the full sizing table for cross-reference.
  • Video tutorials for every step, including a FULL assembly walkthrough. This pattern uses garment construction techniques you might not have built before: faux-welt pockets, a full separating zipper with internal facing, panel seaming. That's by design, and you don't need prior experience with any of it. Every technique has a dedicated private video tutorial included with your purchase, and the full assembly walkthrough takes you through the whole finishing process step by step. First garment? First zipper? No problem. The pattern is detailed, the videos meet you at each step, and you finish.
  • Stitch Lab Community access. Your purchase includes permanent access to the Brioche Crochet Collection chat in The Stitch Lab community, a private space with other makers building this pattern. No credit card. No trial expiration. The space exists because makers asked for it.

Engineered for Real Bodies, Not Brackets

Designed for a high-fashion oversized fit and drape with 8 to 12 inches (20 to 30 cm) of positive ease built into the shaping. This is intentional. The pattern is graded to maintain proportional fit and shape across all seven sizes. The full sizing table is in the photo carousel. Measure the fullest part of your chest, find that number in the "Your Chest" column, and work that size. (See the Fit Guide photo for size details.)

Real-Time Fit Checkpoints: built-in milestones throughout the pattern that guide you through customizing length and width adjustments within your chosen size to fit your unique shape as you go.

The Yarn

Two chunky/bulky yarns (Category 5) in two different colors, worked in alternating directions. Look for yarns with a recommended hook size of 7 to 9mm. Light but chunky (chainette or puño constructions work especially well).

Total yardage ranges from 1,700 to 3,300 yards depending on size, split across two colors. The yardage chart in the photo carousel shows Yarn 1 and Yarn 2 separately for each size.

Construction Notes

This pattern teaches real garment construction in crochet. You build it side-to-side in shaped panels, install a full separating zipper with a custom internal facing, set in faux-welt pockets, shape high-fashion statement armholes with architectural decreases, build the architectural stand-collar as a separate panel, and stabilize the shoulder seams with a structural stitch technique. You finish with new skills and new confidence to carry into your next crochet garment.

Gauge

12 stitches by 12 physical rows over a 4-inch (10 cm) square in pattern. Swatch with both yarns before you start. The pattern walks you through a Target Swatch and a No-Gap Engineering Check to confirm you're on gauge before committing to a full panel.

Skill Level

Adventurous beginner through intermediate. The brioche stitch is a yarn-over slip stitch worked into the front or back loop, and the individual stitches are simple. The architecture is what makes this pattern, and video tutorials walk you through every step that needs one.

Tools

8mm crochet hook (US L/11), tapestry needle, locking stitch markers (minimum 4), measuring tape, standard full separating zipper (don't pre-purchase. The pattern walks you through measuring and selecting the right size for your custom fit).

At the Stitch Lab (c), we treat our patterns like living objects, always evolving with maker feedback to be easier, clearer, and more accessible. Buyers receive updated PDFs at no extra cost as the pattern evolves.
